The Shanghai Cancer Institute was established in 1958 and is affiliated with the Shanghai Health Planning Commission. In 1980, it was recognized as a WHO Collaborative Center for Cancer Prevention and Control. In 1985, it was chosen to establish the State Key Laboratory of Oncogenes and Related Genes. In 1996, the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission jointly established a pilot-scale gene therapy research base in Shanghai. In 2003, the Shanghai Cancer Institute was renamed as the Institute of Oncology of Shanghai Jiaotong University. And in 2010, the Shanghai Cancer Institute was integrated with Renji Hospital of Jiaotong University.
